DEMOCRATIC STATE COMMITTEE APPOINTS HILL WALLACK PARTNER GENERAL COUNSEL
Princeton, NJ – Paul P. Josephson, a partner in the Princeton law firm of Hill Wallack LLP, was
recently appointed General Counsel to the New Jersey Democratic State Committee by State Chairman Joseph Cryan.
The NJDSC is the official state committee of the Democratic Party in the State of New Jersey. The state committee oversees
all activities of the Democratic Party within New Jersey, and provides legal and political resources to Democratic
candidates around the state.
Mr. Josephson said, “It is an honor to have been selected by Chairman Cryan to assist him and the Party in their efforts
in a crucial gubernatorial election year. Hill Wallack has a long tradition of civic participation. We encourage our
attorneys to volunteer and participate in all aspects of civic life in New Jersey and Pennsylvania".
“One of our cornerstone projects has been helping insure that every vote is counted. Most of that work takes place on election
day, but in close races it involves post-election work like recounts and insuring that provisional ballots are recognized and
counted. Over the years, Hill Wallack created the go-to reference manual for election day lawyering that has been distributed
to thousands of lawyers. We’ve recruited scores of attorneys to help campaigns. We’ve trained well over a thousand lawyers
around the state in how to assist voters and protect the electoral franchise. This appointment allows us to continue that
tradition, and to help the NJDSC institutionalize its efforts to protect the right to vote.”
Mr. Josephson has twenty years’ experience advising political candidates and political parties throughout the State of
New Jersey. Most recently, he served as State Counsel for President Obama’s campaign. He has served as counsel to
virtually every statewide Democratic nominee for governor or United States Senate since 1993, has advised most Democratic
members of the State’s Congressional delegation in electoral matters, and has helped lead statewide election day lawyering
efforts in many of those races.
Mr. Josephson is partner-in-charge of the firm's Regulatory & Government Affairs and Gaming Law Practice Groups.
He concentrates his practice in Administrative Law and Litigation, including Election and Campaign Finance Compliance and
Government Ethics. Mr. Josephson previously served as Chief Counsel to the Governor, and as Assistant Attorney General and
Director of the Division of Law within the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. In the latter capacity, he managed
a 550-attorney division responsible for all civil representation of the State of New Jersey, and oversaw the State’s
enforcement of election laws and its implementation of the Help America Vote Act in 2002 and 2003.
Born and raised in Essex County, Mr. Josephson graduated from Montclair Kimberley Academy. He earned his undergraduate degree
from the University of Michigan, and his J.D. with honors from the National Law Center at George Washington University.
Mr. Josephson now resides in Princeton with his wife and children.
