Nielsen V. Lewis is
a partner of Hill Wallack LLP.
He is a partner-in-charge of the
Environmental Practice Group and
a member of the Land Use Division
and the Land Use Litigation
Practice Group.
In his practice, Mr. Lewis
represents public and private sector
clients in a wide variety of
environmental matters and
represents them in environmental
litigation, including complex CERCLA
(Superfund), RCRA, New Jersey Spill
Act and ISRA cases. He
regularly advises clients concerning
site remediation, natural resource
damages, regulatory compliance and
enforcement, environmental
permitting, underground storage
tanks, solid and
hazardous waste facility, and
brownsfields redevelopment. Admitted to
the Superior Court Roster of
Court-Appointed Mediators, Mr. Lewis
also has an active mediation
practice.
Before entering private practice,
Mr. Lewis served as Deputy Attorney
General providing legal counsel to
the New Jersey Board of Public
Utilities, where he gained extensive
state regulatory and administrative
law experience and practiced
extensively before the Appellate
Division of the New Jersey Superior
Court and the Supreme Court of New
Jersey.
A graduate of Princeton
University, Mr. Lewis earned his law
degree from the University of
Michigan Law School. On graduation
from law school, he served as Law
Clerk to the late Honorable Ward J.
Herbert, Judge of the Superior Court
of New Jersey, Chancery Division.
Mr. Lewis is a past Chair of the
Insurance Law Section of the New
Jersey State Bar Association, a
member of its Environmental Law and
Dispute Resolution Sections and a
Master of the Justice Stewart G.
Pollock Environmental American Inn
of Court. A well-known writer and
speaker on environmental and
insurance topics, he has authored
articles in New Jersey Lawyer,
The Magazine; The New Jersey Law
Journal; The Environmental Law
Section Newsletter, New Jersey
Municipalities; Builder/Architect
and National Trial Lawyer; and
lectured at seminars sponsored by
the New Jersey Institute of
Continuing Legal Education; the
Insurance Law, Environmental Law,
Health and Hospital Law, Banking
Law, Individual Rights and Labor and
Employment Law Sections of the New
Jersey State Bar Association; the
New Jersey Corporate Counsel
Association; the New Jersey State
League of Municipalities; the New
Jersey Institute of Municipal
Attorneys; and the New Jersey Water
Federation. The Humane Society of
the United States has officially
recognized and commended Mr. Lewis
for outstanding services in the
cause of humane care of animals.
Mr. Lewis is admitted to practice
in New Jersey, before the U.S.
District Court for the District of
New Jersey and before the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He
is a member of the American, New
Jersey, Mercer County and Princeton
Bar Associations.
